Camping With Infants
Last weekend, my husband and I took our family camping for the first time this year. Hendrix, now 4 months, came right along with us! In our case, we "camp" in luxury, having a big RV, but I often get questions about how to camp with infants. If you have an RV like we did, you can set up a travel cot or bassinet for your baby: this is what we did for Hendrix. We'd put him in our bed to fall asleep then would move him over to his bassinet after his dreamfeed.

Tips for Camping with Infants:
- Take a playpen / travel cot or bassinet if you can fit it.
- Take warm sleep sacks (2.5 tog).
- If you are tent camping and have a cryer, consider moving to the car with the bassinet until baby falls asleep. This will be less disturbing for other campers.
- Keep baby in long sleeved shirts and pants to avoid bug bites. Insect repellants are not safe for infants.
- Keep baby on the same eating and sleeping schedule as at home.
- Playpens can double as a safe play area. Otherwise, use a large tablecloth / blanket.
- Bring extra clothes for baby - for layering and inevitable messes.
- Supply containers make for a great baby bath tub!
- If your baby is used to a night light, hang a mini flashlight in the tent. Also makes night time checks or diaper changes easier.
- Don't forget to put a hat on baby at night, if you're using a tent.
If you are nervous, try putting up a tent in your back yard first.
